Cape Town

Facilities

Although each of our properties are all slightly different, we generally provide the following facilities in the property:

  • Each room has a bed, desk, chair, cupboard, book shelf, curtains or blinds.
  • Microwave, a stove top, fridge, freezer, and kettle in the kitchen.
  • Students should bring their own bedding.
  • High speed WIFI.
  • Laundry facilities.
  • Most properties are close to the university bus route.
  • My Student House also operates a private bus service along certain routes, which will be included for FREE as part of your rent. This is only applicable to some Residences on certain routes.
  • General cleaning by one of our staff members once a week is provided for common use areas only. All students are expected to contribute to always keeping the property clean and cleaning after themselves. This includes cleaning/mopping floors, washing dishes, cleaning toilets after you have used them, take out garbage, etc.

Security

Although properties differ slightly smaller properties generally have the following available:

  • Cameras.
  • Electric fencing or spikes on the walls.
  • Pin code or biometric access gates.
  • Alarm system with panic button linked to armed response.

For bigger buildings, all of the above are available as well as a night guard.

Some properties also have a live-in residence manager and the others have a dedicated residence manager that can be contacted in case of emergencies.

Transport

CPUT

  • All the properties in Bellville are within walking distance to the CPUT shuttle that goes to the Bellville Campus.
  • All the properties in Parow are within walking distance to the CPUT shuttle that goes to the Bellville Campus.
  • Aden House is close to CPUT Mowbray campus.
  • Burns and Donne are close to D6 and Mowbray campus.
  • Camden is close to Cape Town CBD and D6. It is close to the My Citi Bus stop which can be used to travel to D6.
  • CPUT students can use the MSH shuttle from Stellendale Junction to UWC

UWC

There are no university shuttles available. My Student House has a shuttle that caters for UWC students living in Bellville, Parow areas and Stellendale Junction. This is already included in your rent and there is no additional charge. The operating times of the shuttle are subject to change and you will need to fit in with the published schedule.

UCT

Burns and Donne are within walking distance to UCT Medical Campus and Groote Schuur Hospital. It is also on the Jamie Shuttle route to the main campus.

Burg and Woodroyd are in Rondebosch and is less than 500m from the UCT main gate.

Northlink College

All the Bellville properties are within walking distance to Northlink campus in Voortrekker Rd, Bellville. The closest properties to the Tygerberg campus in Plattekloof are in Parow, but this is a long walk, there is no university transport available.

Rosebank and any other college in Cape Town CBD

Aden House, Burns, Camden and Donne would be suitable as they are closest to these colleges. There is public transport available close to the properties.

Stellenbosch University and Boland College (Stellenbosch)

The Marine is the only property we have for Stellenbosch and Boland College students. There is a shuttle that goes from the building to Stellenbosch Central.

Rent and Charges

When applying at the beginning of the year, lease agreements are valid for the full academic year which is from 1 February until 30 November. When you sign a lease agreement you are agreeing to pay for the full 10-month period, and the lease may not be cancelled. If you are only applying for the 2nd semester, in the middle of the year, then your lease can be made shorter, but these applications can only be processed from May and are subject to room availability.

Please note that for NSFAS students the NSFAS allowable rates will be charged and the balance needs to be topped up by the student.

For NSFAS students, rates for the cheaper sharing rooms should be covered in full by your private accommodation allowance. NSFAS will not cover a single room in full and they will not cover the more expensive sharing rooms in full, so you will need to top this up each month.

Rent For NSFAS students:
As per the above table, some rooms require a top-up of either R1000 or R2000 per month. This must be paid in advance by the 1st of every month towards your rent. This money will be refunded to you at the end of the year, 28 days after the end date of your lease agreement, when we have received the full NSFAS payout and if NSFAS has covered all your accommodation costs.

Rent for private students:
Your full rent should be paid before the 1st of every month in advance. The first month’s rent must be paid before moving in.

Security Deposits(refundable):
NSFAS students are not required to pay a deposit.
Private students and other bursary students are required to pay the equivalent of 1 month’s rent as their deposit before they can move in. (this is separate from the rent). This needs to be paid at the time of booking before your room will be confirmed.

Deposits:
Rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Security deposits are refunded at the end of the year, 28 days after the end date of your lease agreement.

Cape Town students need to pay an annual membership fee of R2500 to be able to stay with My Student House each year. Some of the benefits of staying with MSH include, but are not limited to:

  • MSH Shuttle: Free trips on the MSH shuttle subject to available. These trips include hiking trips, Birthday Celebration Bus, Beach trips, university drop offs/pickups, and many more.
  • National Sports Events: Free transport and accommodation for participating teams.

  • End-of-Year Awards Party: Free access to the annual end-of-year awards party for qualifying individuals.

Water and Electricity

In most houses, water and electricity are included for common use areas. This covers items such as kitchen equipment and geysers.

However, as there are airconditioning units in some rooms, electricity in your room is usually provided via a prepaid meter and is for the student to top up. This is normally around R200 per month, depending on your usage for 2 students sharing.

For all flats:

  • Water is provided at R100 per person per month. If you run out you and your flatmates will need to top it up as water is on prepaid meters.
  • Electricity is not included in your rent and you and your flatmates will need to top the meter up.
